Build a Green Economy that Works for Everyone

One Seattle Climate Action Plan

Large-scale change to more climate-friendly ways of living potentially brings major economic changes, too. We need to make sure that everyone can prosper in a greener future. The time is now to make sure people have the right skills to compete for new climate jobs in energy and technology fields, the right growth opportunities for small and local businesses, and the right positioning to lead the way in transforming local markets.

If we can create an inclusive, local green economy, we can keep growing economic value, benefitting local businesses, youth, and families, especially in frontline communities. We can also take the opportunity to be smarter and more strategic in addressing common problems like gentrification and displacement, making sure that change brings opportunity without leaving people behind.

Climate Action Spotlight: Creating Space for Climate Solutions

The Seattle Climate Innovation Hub, launched in a partnership between the Office of Economic Development and public/private organizations, is dedicated to investing in and designing technology to combat climate change. The downtown Seattle space invites entrepreneurs and start-ups to co-locate and collaborate with each other to push innovative ideas forward, like converting gas-powered passenger vehicles into electric versions.

Climate Action Spotlight: Investing in Green Career Pathways

Readying young people and existing workers for clean energy and construction jobs is a key area of focus for many City departments. This includes initiatives like incentivizing pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship career pathways for low-income, women, and/or Black, Indigenous and other people of color workers. It also includes re-training existing workers for new types of jobs, such as Seattle City Light’s electric vehicle charging installer program
